For the group client project, I chose to work on the Branding & Marketing Material for Transmedia 2023. I wanted to partake in this project as I liked the idea of coming up with the core theme, and I wanted to challenge myself by doing something I was a little more uncomfortable with. Although my Belbin Team Role is the plant, who’s main attribute is their ability to generate ideas, I generally struggle with coming up with an idea with little prompt or constraints to work with.
The outline of the brief was to create branding and marketing material for Debs Wilson and Marina Brkljac to use for the Transmedia Exhibition in May. The Transmedia Exhibition is an event hosted in the West Downs Centre that has been running for over a decade, it uses Transmedia Storytelling to showcase all the work done in the Digital Media Studio in the last year. The event needs to both cater towards the students, as well as being aimed at bringing industry professionals in to be able to offer opportunities to students. Overall, the idea was for the group to deliver a brand identity for the exhibition, along with other things such as posters, flyers, and website designs.
We began with idea brainstorming, and eventually came down to two ideas we liked. The first was a retro game idea, which followed last year’s theme of ‘break out’. The idea was that after break out, society would ‘Reboot’ like loading up an old game. This theme also publicised the new game pathway that had been introduced last year, meaning that they would have a chance to show off to local industry and draw in prospective students, although the game students wouldn’t be the only focus. Our second idea was based on an art style with large solid colour blots with line art over the top. The idea was that each pathway would be represented by a colour, and it promoted collaboration by having the colours merge when pathways worked together. We presented these ideas to our peers, part of the main audience, the majority of which voted to do our colour theme, which we then developed further.
The narrative was that the world doesn’t really appreciate designers and developers (speaking as the whole department) because they don’t understand what they do. The goal is to stand out, and not only show what we do, but also, through narrative, demonstrate that without design, the world would be boring and black and white, and that we, as designers, introduce colour to the world.
