This task was to create sketches around campus to focus on noting down ideas. The sketches were meant to focus on getting aspects down quickly whilst retaining key points. Each drawing was intended to take 15 minutes as this would mean there was a focus on getting the key elements of the drawing on paper quickly.
The first drawing was done of the bike stands by Queen's Road accommodation. I tried to get the nice perspective of being under cover into my drawing, whilst adding texture to the wall to imply it's made of brick. I do think that the perspective of the building is done poorly. I did try repeatedly to get this angle right, but I didn't quite get there in the end. There are a few inconsistencies with this drawing, but as a whole, you can tell it's of a bike rack so that's a success of being able to note ideas down.
My next drawing was done of the pathway up to the Kenneth Kettle Building. When I first started drawing this one, I hadn't realised quite how many buildings there were behind this one, and in the end I got quite confused with lines that were walls and ceilings and which is which.
You can see the general shape of the building in the drawing, with it's uniquely angled roof inwards, and I'd say that'd be enough to be able to tell what the drawing was of.
In my third drawing of the nice pond area on campus, I had a particularly hard struggle getting the perspective on this one, and in the end I had wasted so much time with trying to get the perspective right that I had to stick with one that got the point across, which is what the task is supposed to be teaching. It is very clear that the perspective is way off when looking at them side by side, however. For the foliage around the pond, I mostly just implied it through lines to get the idea across, however for the decorative metal in the middle I tried a bit harder to get the detail.
This photo is of the main part of campus by the stripe, in which there was a few people about, so I wanted this to be communicated in my drawing. I also liked the balcony that I was stood on being visible, as well as the second levelled garden, so I made sure to include those in my drawing. There was a lot of different parts to this drawing, so I wasn't able to put in that much detail, but for a sketch of lost of different elements in 15 minutes, I think it worked out very successfully.
My last drawing was of a signpost on the path on campus. When compared together, you can see that my drawing isn't nearly as tall and skinny as the photo, which is one thing that sticks out when you first look. This, however, is the opposite of the previous stripe drawing as this one has a main focal point that I put lots of effort into, rather than spreading my time across multiple elements, however I did try my best to capture the extensive background of this image, which I think I did well to do, especially with the path in which I usually struggle with the perspective of.
Overall, one issue that is consistent within all of my drawings, is that I'm not great with the perspective, as they all are at least slightly off. Thought this isn't too important for general quick sketches, sometimes it is the foundation of a drawing, and throughout all of these I couldn't seem to get it right, so that is one area I now am focusing to work on.
